Carrel

Slow Social

The same walkthrough new members get on their first visit. Every feature, in order.

  1. 01 · Slow Social

Carrel is a small, closed room for reading and talking about real things. No feed of strangers, no ads, no scraping, no AI training. This walkthrough shows every part of the site.

    • Everything here starts from a page claimed out of Wikipedia.
    • Nothing posted inside is readable without an account.
    • You got in because someone vouched for you, and you can vouch for others.
  2. 02 · Your Desk

Your Desk is your public profile and your home screen in one. Your address is carrel.club/u/yourname.

    • A short bio and up to five links.
    • Your Decks, your Cards, your posts, and the people you follow, who follow you and who you invited.
    • Below that, replies to you and the latest activity from the pages and members you follow.
    Open your Desk
  3. 03 · Cards and Decks

A Card is a page you joined. A Deck is a collection of Cards you build yourself, and it has its own posts.

    • Save any Card to a Deck with the stacked cards icon.
    • Decks have their own posts, comments and facts pulled from the Cards inside.
    • Invite another member to a Deck so they can add Cards and post in it.
    Open your Decks
  4. 04 · Queue

When a page is a book, an album or a film, you can add it to your Queue and mark it done later.

    • One private list for things to read, hear and watch.
    • Filter by kind, mark done, or remove.
    • Books link out to a local bookstore through Bookshop.org.
    Open your Queue
  5. 05 · Posts and comments

Any member can start a thread on any page. There are no limits on posting, replying, voting or sharing.

    • Threads open with the page they belong to, and you can link a second page so the thread appears in both.
    • Comments nest like a conversation, with up and down votes and a flag for anything off.
    • Paste a link and the video, record or article is pulled in.
  6. 06 · Standing

Taking part earns standing inside that page. Standing is earned per page and decays slowly if you stop showing up.

    • Posts, comments and votes from other people build it.
    • Self votes never count.
    • Enough standing in a page makes you a moderator there.
    Read the ladder
  7. 07 · Activity and Discover

Two ways to find what is happening and where to go next.

    • Activity shows new members first, then latest posts, new pages and recent joins.
    • Discover suggests pages based on what the pages you joined link to.
    • The search icon in the header finds or claims a page from anywhere.
    Open Discover
  8. 08 · Following people

Members are people, not handles. Open anyone's name to read their Desk.

    • Follow someone and their posts land on your Desk.
    • Any member can see who invited you and who you invited.
    • Deck invitations show up on your Desk and on Activity to approve or deny.
  9. 09 · Invitations

You have twenty invitations. Every account records who let it in.

    • Share a page link or send an invitation by email.
    • The chain of invitations is visible to you.
    • Bad branches are raised for review by a person, not a machine.
  10. 10 · Settings and help

Everything else lives in the menu at the top right.

    • Eight colour palettes, light through to deep teal.
    • An accessibility button at the bottom of every page for high contrast and text size.
    • Support takes bugs and feature requests straight to the people running this.
    Open Support
